Our Vision for Art & Design
Students at SJB who study Art and Design embark on a journey of self-expression. Along the way there will be a variety of practical opportunities across a range of skill sets. Students explore, enjoy, unlock their creative potential and enhance their wellbeing. Art and Design prepares students for the creative industries and equips them with transferable skills for other pathways.
Key Stage 3
Year 7
Students learn about and explore the formal elements through key skills in drawing and painting. During the year they will experience working with a range of materials and techniques including printmaking and clay. Work produced is in response to contextual sources.
Year 7 Art Assessment Framework
Year 8
Students further develop and demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding learnt in Year 7. Drawing and painting are again fundamental. More complex printmaking and clay techniques are explored alongside introducing other new materials and processes. Students are given choices to encourage independence and more variety of outcomes. Work produced is in response and informed by a range of contextual sources.
Year 8 Art Assessment Framework
Year 9
Students develop mastery of the skills learnt in Year 7 and 8. Students are encouraged to work with greater independence and relate their work to topical as well as personal issues, informed by a wider range of contextual sources. They develop further understanding of the requirements to proceed to GCSE study and are equipped with the skills required for the course.
Year 9 Art Assessment Framework
Key Stage 4
Exam Board: OCR
Portfolio: 60% Students develop their own theme from a set starting point and select their own choice of artists and designers to inspire and inform their work.
Externally Set Task: 40%
Externally Set Task Structure: Preparatory period commencing on or from 1 January (of Year 11).
Five themes each with a range of visual and written stimuli set by the exam board of which students select one as their starting point and own choice of artists to inspire and inform their work. The preparatory period concludes with 10 hours of supervised time where students produce a final outcome/s.

Course Overview:
x5 50 minute lesson a fortnight
Students explore and are encouraged to work with a range of materials and processes including, drawing, painting, printmaking, digital media and mix media among others.
The course is very much personalised to students’ strengths. Independence is strongly promoted as students develop their own ideas and work in response to the artists and designers that they have chosen to study.

Exam Board: Eduqas
Personal Investigation: 60%
Consists of two parts:
- Practical project based on themes and subject matter of personal significance.
- An extended written element of 1000 words minimum, which may contain images and texts and must clearly relate to practical work using an appropriate working vocabulary and specialist terminology.
Externally Set Assignment: 40%
Externally Set Assignment Structure: Preparatory period commencing on or from 1 February (of Year 13). Students select one starting point from a series of visual or written stimuli to inspire and inform their own work. The preparatory period concludes with 15 hours of supervised time where students produce a final outcome/s.

Students complete several projects that continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in preparation for their personal investigation and externally set assignment. They will also be introduced to working with new materials and processes which will enhance and build their portfolio for progression onto higher education study.
Qualification: A Level Graphic Communication
Exam Board: AQA
Personal Investigation: 60%
Students produce a practical investigation, into an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by written material. The focus of their investigation is identified independently by the student and leads to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes.
Externally Set Assignment: 40%
Externally Set Assignment Structure: Preparatory period commencing on or from 1 February (of Year 13). Students select one starting point from a choice of eight questions to inspire and inform their own work. The preparatory period concludes with 15 hours of supervised time where students produce a final outcome/s.

Course Overview:
x12 50 minute lessons a fortnight
Students complete several projects that introduce them to a variety of experiences that explore a range of graphic media, processes and techniques of both traditional art and new design media. They will learn how Graphic design relies on design methodology to solve problems and craft clear visual messages. This will prepare students for their personal investigation, externally set assignment and build their portfolio for progression onto higher education study.

This will develop their photography and postproduction in preparation for their personal investigation, externally set assignment and build their portfolio for progression onto higher education study.
