Extra Curricular

Extra Curricular

Here at SJB, we don’t just value what happens inside the classroom, but also what happens out of it. We believe that a well-balanced, broad education, and certainly one that gets the best out of the children, should combine curricular and extracurricular activities. The activities we run, as well as day trips, residential and international trips and reflection days help to shape our students and give them experiences that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Running activities is also a fantastic way for students to discover their hidden talents and build long-lasting relationships with their peers.

Where possible, our Year 7 and 8 students are expected to take up two activities per week, one of which should be a sporting or outdoor activity, but they can always do more! The schedule of activities is published termly, and students must sign up through Arbor. For any further information, please speak to Mr McKenna, our Assistant Head, and Miss Brooks, our House & Extra-curricular Coordinator.

School Show

Our school show is a huge highlight in the school calendar. We pride ourselves on ensuring we create an inclusive, fun and creative environment for students to develop all- important social skills that will serve them well in their future endeavours. Participating in the show increases confidence, develops creativity, enables students to make new friends and there is no doubt about it – being in the show is so much fun!

The show is performed in November but we audition in July which is why it is open to students in Years 8-13. There is a vast range of ways that students can be involved; performing, stage management, lighting, sound, make-up, marketing to name a few. Our shows are such a celebration of the amazing talents of our students and a wonderful way to bring our community together. This quote from a student provides a real insight into what the show means to them:

“I have done this twice now and every time I feel accepted by everyone and I really fit in. The show is a place for everyone to be themself. The teachers are so supportive as well as the cast. You feel so welcomed and I always have so much fun. This has deepened my love for acting and convinced me to take this skill of acting with me later on in life. I have met so many more nice people and made so many new friends.”

Over the last ten years, we have produced the following shows:

2014 High School Musical

2015 Oliver!

2016 Romeo and Juliet

2017 Peter Pan

2018 Grease

2019 Little Shop of Horrors
2021 The Addams Family
2022 A Midsummer Night’s Dream
2023 Nativity – the Musical

Duke of Edinburgh Award

All students in Year 10 are given the opportunity to register in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in the autumn term. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, programme of activities for everyone aged 14-24. Participation in their DofE gives young people the opportunity to experience new activities or develop existing skills. There are three progressive levels of programme which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. These are nationally recognised awards which are valued by both universities and employers.

Young people create their own DofE programme by choosing a volunteering, physical and skills activity. Students need to show a regular commitment (approximately one hour per week) for each activity over a period of at least three months. One of the activities must be continued for a further three months. The fourth part of the award is an expedition which is organised by the school following the completion of a training programme.

Those students who successfully complete bronze can join us for their silver award in either year 11 or 12. We also support students who are completing Gold awards.
