Our Vision for Modern Foreign Languages
Students at SJB study foreign languages to become citizens of the world, equipped with transferable and communication skills, as well as an open-mindedness to other cultures.
We offer French, German, Spanish and Italian.
Key Stage 3
Year 7
In Year 7, students are allocated one of the following languages based on their preference, French, Spanish, Italian and German. We aim to give students their first or second choice.
In Y7, the following topics are covered in all languages:
• All about me
• Family and friends
• Free time
• Where I live
• School
Students focus on using the present tense and develop their skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Student choose one of the three languages to continue studying from Year 8 onwards.
Yr 7 Carousel Assessment Frameworks
Year 8
2024-25 – Students follow their chosen language from Year 8.
All languages cover the following topics:
• My family, friends and me
• Local area and/or holidays
• School
• Work and future plans
• Global dimension
Students focus on using two tenses; the present tense, as well as the future or past tense. Students continue to develop their skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Yr 8 Assessment Frameworks
Year 9
French & Spanish
In Year 9, students begin to study some of the topics from Year 8 in more depth.
French:
• My world
• Travel
• Work and future plans
• My life now and then
• World issues
Spanish:
• My world
• Travel
• Work and future plans
• Healthy living
• World issues
Students focus on using three tenses; the present, past and future tenses, as well as gaining familiarity with GCSE-style tasks. Students continue to develop their skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Italian:
In Year 9, students begin to study the main topics from Year 8 in a greater depth.

• Hobbies and free time
• Daily and cultural life
• School
Students focus on using three tenses; the present, past and future tenses, as well as gaining familiarity with GCSE-style tasks. Students continue to develop their skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
